When are dentures or dental implants necessary?

If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, you may need dentures or dental implants to replace the missing teeth.

Replacing a Single Tooth

Generally, a single-tooth dental implant is the best tooth-replacement option if you are only missing one tooth. A single implant can replace a missing tooth with an artificial tooth root and a dental crown that looks just like your remaining teeth. This may also be an option if you have just one or a few missing teeth.

Replacing Multiple Teeth

You may also consider dental implants if you have some healthy, natural teeth left in your mouth but need multiple teeth replaced. Partial dentures are also an option for patients with some existing teeth that are healthy enough to support the artificial teeth.

Replacing All Your Teeth

If you are missing all of your natural teeth, or if they all need to be extracted, you can use full dental implants or complete dentures to replace a full arch of teeth.

Differences between Dentures and Dental Implants

Look and feel: False teeth have come a long way in recent decades, and today’s dentures look much more like natural teeth than they did years ago. However, implants are the top-of-the-line teeth replacement solution because they are entirely secure and feel just like natural teeth.

Getting Dentures is Easy: Dentures don’t require oral surgery like other tooth replacement options. While Dental Implants will require multiple appointments and healing time, dentures are a quicker and less invasive solution.

Cost: Dentures are also more affordable than dental implants. Price is essential when considering dental implants vs. dentures for tooth loss. While a single tooth implant costs around $3,000, All-on-Four dental implants start at $20,000 per arch.

Maintenance: Conventional dentures work best when secured in place by a denture adhesive, and they need to be cleaned daily with appropriate cleaning solutions. Implants require less maintenance as you care for them the same as you would your natural teeth.

Candidacy: Some types of dentures will work for every person. However, you must have sufficient bone density to support the dental implants. If you have a weak jaw or don’t have enough bone left in your jaw, you may need a bone grafting procedure before you can get dental implants.

Long-term health: Using dentures and living with missing teeth may lead to bone loss over time. Dental implants support the health of your jaw and support the facial muscles.

Durability: With proper care, dental implants can last for a lifetime. Dentures will need to be adjusted and replaced every ten years or so.
